Horses Know…

When my daughter was learning to canter, she asked her instructor if she could ride Pepe, her favorite horse at the barn.

“Pepe isn’t good with ambiguity,” her instructor demurred.

My daughter was eager but she was also scared. Her legs were signaling “go fast” but her heart was saying “stay slow”.

I see this tug of war in myself sometimes and I’m finally learning to listen. The thing pushing back needs to be heard. And just having an audience can be enough for it to relax.

Horses know: We are so much better in the world when what we say and mean are the same thing.
