The Dread of Public Speaking: Three ways to feel more like yourself in the spotlight

Most of us dread public speaking. We duck, dodge and run. It’s no wonder we aren’t good at it.

No matter how smart, funny, wise or dynamic we may be with our friends, when we get in front of an audience we’re awkward, we freeze, go wooden, read slides, and pace. We say things that everyone knows. We tremble, we blush or we listen as our voices shrink to nothing.

But this dread is malleable. We can loosen its grip on our hands, our voice, our mind if we learn what to say to it.

Here are three quick tips for countering your dread and feeling more like your awesome self in the spotlight:

  1. Picture yourself at your happiest. Think of a time when you were the most joyful and contented. Where were you, who were you with, how did you feel? Feel this experience in your gut and then take yourself into your spotlight.

  2. Pre-game power pose: I can’t say enough about the power pose. Starfish Up, Victory Arms/Chin Up. These positions give your body the vital message: You rock! And after two minutes (or one, if you’re rushing) can lower your stress and increase your confidence. You’re also seen as far more open and likable. (Thanks Amy Cuddy!)

  3. Study yourself: Start paying attention to how you are when you’re happy and comfortable. How do you move? How do you talk? This is the root of your authentic style and once you know it, it will be your best friend.

When you can feel more like yourself in the spotlight, your authenticity will shine through. And that is compelling to an audience.
